3.3 Interpreting and Adjusting the Radar Picture
Navigational echoes may be large, small, bright or faint, dependingnotonly
onthe size of theobjectbut alsoonitsorientation and surface.Different
objectsreflectthe radarsignalsindifferent ways.Forexample,vertical
objectssuchascliffs reflectsignalsbetterthanslopingonessuchas
sandbanks.
Highcoastlinesand mountainous coastalregionscan be observedatthe
longestradarrange.However,thefirstsightoflandmaybeamountainseveral
milesinlandfromthecoastline.The actual coastlinemay not appearonthe
radaruntilthevesselis closeto the lineofsightdistance.
Theradarindicationmay not be similartoyourvisualobservation; a nearby
smallobjectmayappearto be the same sizeasadistantlarge objecton the
radar.However,withexperiencetheapproximatesizeofdifferentobjectscan
bedetermined by the relativesize and brightness of the echoes.
Sometargets, suchas buoys and small boats, can be difficult to differentiate,
sincetheybobandtossaboutin the waves and do not presenta consistent
reflecting surface.Consequently,theseechoes haveatendencyto fade and
brightenand,attimes,todisappearmomentarily.Buoysandsmallboatsoften
resembleeachother, but boats can usuallybedistinguished by their motion.
Notallradar echoesare produced by hardnavigational items. Some echoes
maybe receivedfromirregularities on the surfaceof the water, particularlyat
closerange(seaclutter),orfromrainorsnoweitheraroundthevesselorinthe
distance.Inaddition,someechoesmaybeindirectreturnstotheradarscanner,
providingfalseechoes or multipleechoes.
Theeffectsofmanyfalseechoescanbeminimized,andthetargetpresentation
clarified usingthecontrolssummarizedbelow. Thissection explainshow to
interpret the radar pictureand howthecontrolsaffect the display. It provides
instructions foradjustingthe settings,describesthecircumstances in which
theyshouldbeadjusted,andhowthey interactwith eachother.
